Simple Guide to Calibrating Your Load Cells

Load cells are special sensors capable of detecting force. They can then convert this force into an electrical output signal for precise measurement. Load cells have use cases across multiple industries like aviation, defence, healthcare, chemicals and more. For ensuring accuracy, these versatile yet sensitive instruments need correct calibration. There are specific instructions for calibrating each type of load cell. These instructions typically come from the load cell manufacturers who sell these products. However, you can remember some simple rules for calibrating most types of these instruments. But before explore into how to calibrate, take a look at why you need to!

Why do You Need to Routinely Calibrate Load Cells?
Precisely measuring force is the primary function of a load cell. High accuracy is critical for the effectiveness of operations. However, when you continue to use a load cell over a long time, it can develop lags and deliver imprecise data. Loose cables, mechanical damage and depreciation are some of the issues that may crop up while using a load cell. If the situation leads to repeated inaccuracies, you should consider sending your load cell to be recalibrated by a professional. But if your load cell has calibration errors, you can follow a simple set of steps to rectify them.

What Steps should you Follow for Calibrating your Load Cell?
Whether you are working with an s-type load cell or a stainless steel load cell, the following steps can help you fix simple issues with calibration.

  • Ensure Stability: You must make sure the scale is on a platform that does not move around. A stable environment with lower risks of heavy winds or vibrations is ideal for calibrating your load cell.
  • Select Calibration Mode: You can choose the mode and access the Setup Menu. At this stage, you must select Platform Setups and then opt for Span Calibration.
  • Choose a Test Value Weight: After you have selected Span Calibration, you can key in a test value weight that falls within the scale limits. Ideally, you should choose a test value weight that is about half of your load cell's upper capacity. Remember that your double ended load cell will have a very different capacity from your single-ended load cell. Always check the calibration certificate to know the upper capacity for the load cell you are using.
  • Recheck the Platform: The platform needs to be clear of everything else. After you ensure that the bottom of the scale is not touching any item, you can finally press Enter.
  • Conduct the Calibration: Once the instructions show up, you can gently place your test item at the centre of your scale. The scale will take a few moments to get stable. Then you can press Enter. After calibration is over, the instrument will move back to the platform menu.

After these steps, you can know whether your load cell is working as it should. If issues persist, you can take it for professional servicing. However, when you buy your device from reputed load cell suppliers in Hyderabad or any of the other major cities of India, you can be assured of receiving a great quality product with few calibration issues.
